At Tonstone, we aren’t just cabinet painters, we’re fine finishers. Unlike other companies that come, paint and leave in the same day, we put the time and care into fully preparing your cabinets before refacing so you get the finest quality of finish possible.
We refinish cabinets in both stain and paint and use only a few specialty brands that we trust to give your cabinets durable, scratch resistant finishes that will keep them looking new for years to come.
Our Refinishing Process
After you get in touch with us, we’ll set up an initial consultation to measure your cabinets and discuss the kind of finish you’re looking for. Next, we’ll refer you to our designers and favorite paint shop so you can choose your stain or paint color.
Once you choose your paint/stain and sign off on your quote, we’ll start work. The first few days will be prep work: setting up our containment sheeting, removing doors, filling cracks and chips, sanding down for an even surface, and taping.
For paint, we apply a first coat of primer, and then check for any cracks or scratches that weren't previously visible. After a second round of filling and sanding, we'll apply a second coat of primer. Again we check for any imperfections that would interfere with the finish, and finally get to painting. While your paint dries, we'll take your cabinet doors and drawers back at our shop and reface them there. When everything is fully dry, we’ll reinstall your doors and drawers and do a thorough cleaning so you can start using your cabinets immediately.
For stain, the process takes slightly longer. To ensure your stain adheres well, we need to fully sand off the existing stain, which can be very time consuming for intricate cabinet designs. Once the sanding is complete however, the staining process is fairly quick, as it only needs a single coat of stain. Then the same as with paint, we’ll reinstall your doors and drawers and do a final clean so you can enjoy your new cabinets.
